The Rising Trend of Multi-Generational Travel
In recent years, there has been a noticeable surge in the number of families choosing vacation with their extended relatives. This growing trend reflects a desire for shared experiences and strengthened family bonds.
I can speak about this from personal experience, as I myself recently celebrated my 40th birthday with a week-long trip to a Great Barrier Reef island. I decided to share this momentous occasion and holiday with my parents, sibling, sister in-law, cousin and two sets of aunties and uncles. With 12 of us on tour in total and lots of time stuck on an island together, the week was surely one we will ALL remember forever!
Let’s discuss four compelling reasons why people are increasingly choosing to travel with their extended families:
1. Creating Lasting Memories:
Extended family vacations provide the perfect opportunity to create lasting memories that span generations. Whether it’s exploring new destinations, engaging in exciting activities like scuba diving, or simply spending quality time together, these shared experiences become the fabric of family lore. From the youngest grandchild to the most seasoned family member, everyone contributes to the collective tapestry of cherished memories.
2. Strengthening Family Bonds:
Traveling with grandchildren, kids, parents, siblings or other extended family members, fosters a unique environment for building and strengthening family bonds. The shared challenges and joys of navigating a new destination create a space for open communication and connection. Extended family trips offer a chance for relatives who may not see each other often to reconnect and forge stronger ties. These shared adventures can deepen relationships and create a sense of unity among family members. Bonding over the excitement of shared discoveries and new experiences is a common outcome of multi-generational travel.
3. Celebrating Milestones:
Special occasions and milestones often serve as catalysts for extended family travel. Whether it’s a milestone birthday, a significant anniversary or a family reunion, these events provide a perfect excuse to gather the clan and explore new horizons together. Traveling as an extended family allows for the celebration of life’s important moments in unique and memorable settings, adding an extra layer of joy and significance to the occasion.
4. Distributing the load:
Traveling with an extended family brings a practical advantage of shared responsibilities. From meal preparation to childcare, the load is distributed among the various family members, making the trip more manageable for everyone. This collaborative approach not only eases the logistical aspects of travel, but also ensures that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, can fully participate in and enjoy the vacation.
